Chapter 9

Edmund left Mr Beaver‘s house. He wanted to find the White Witch. He really knew that the White Witch was bad and cruel. It was very cold and the snown was falling all around him. He turned up his collar and shuffled across the top of dam to far side of the river. He would never have found his way if the moon handn‘t come out by the time he got to the other river. And there, on the other side of the riverin the middle of a little plain beetwen two hills, he saw what must be the White Witch‘s house. It was really a small castle. He crossed the river on the ice and walked up to the castle. There he saw an enormous lion. He was afraid to go on and afraid to go back. He began to wonder that the lion was standing so still. Edmund remembered what the others had sad about the White Witch turning people into stone. It was the stone lion. He turned away and began to cross the countyard. In themiddle of it he saw that were dozens of statues: safyrs, wolfs, foxes, bears and  a winged horse. Edmund went to the far side of the countyard and saw a flight of stone steps going up. He went up and a great wolf. This wolf invited him to come in and wait. Edmund was surprised that wolf was talking with him. In a long gloomy hall he saw the White Witch.
